What's the difference between a Bar Mitzvah and a Bat Mitzvah? Or what's the difference between a B'nai Mitzvah and a B'not Mitzvah? Oftentimes, parents are confused as to the proper wording they should use on their Bar Mitzvah invitations, so we'll clarify the meaning of each in this short article.

A Bar Mitzvah is a ceremony which recognizes a 13-year-old boy as an adult and responsible for his moral and religious duties. A Bat Mitzvah, on the other hand, is a similar celebration for a 12- or 13-year-old girl. Bar/Bat Mitzvah translated from Hebrew means "Son/Daughter of the Commandments", referring to the laws of the Torah which the young adult is now held responsible to follow.

When two or more boys celebrate their Mitzvah, it is called a B'nai Mitzvah. When two or more girls celebrate, it is known as a B'not Mitzvah. But, if more than one child celebrates together and the genders are mixed, then we call it a B'nai Mitzvah.

Did you know that some Jews will celebrate a second Bar Mitzvah when they reach 83 years of age? The Torah says that a "normal" lifespan is 70 years, so logic would have it that an 83-year-old can be considered 13 years of age in their second lifetime.

We hope this helps in determining just what to call your special celebration!
