In these challenging economic times, saving money is on everyone's minds. Families are even looking for creative ways to cut costs on important milestone celebrations such as Quinceañera and Sweet 16 events. Here, we examine ways to save money on your invitations, your dress, and much more.

First, make a list of everything you'll need for your special day. Then, set a reasonable budget and make a conscientious effort to adhere to it.

Purchase your gown from a designer outlet store or online. Try locating a designer outlet store in your area for your gown and purchase brand new at a fraction of the cost. As an alternative, you may locate gowns online at discounted prices. Keep in mind that if you do purchase online, your gown may need alterations, and the cost for these can really add up! Or you may enlist the help of a talented seamstress if you are lucky enough to know one.

Order your invitations and decorations online. When doing your online search, you can save up to 25% on your Quinceanera invitation costs just by simply including the word "discount" in your search terms. Most online retailers are dependable and can offer higher discounts because of low overhead costs. If you are unsure about ordering online, research the company by checking how long they've been in business and their state's Better Business Bureau. The fundamental point to remember is that you can get the same quality items online while racking up big savings.

Consider alternative options for your venue. Typically, most Quinceañeras are held in event halls. More and more people are opting for backyard celebrations. If you don't have a suitable area, perhaps a relative or close friend will allow you to use theirs. However, if you have your heart set on a traditional event hall, look into booking your Quinceañera at a less sought-after time. Sunday afternoon events will often cost less that a Saturday evening event.

Celebrate with one of your BFF's. By celebrating with one of your best friends, you can essentially split most of the cost in half. The downside is that, unless you are really lucky, the event will not occur on or near either of your birthdays. On the upside, you get to share the royal treatment with your best friend while saving your parents hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. Plus, everyone will consider you to be the most gracious princess by sharing your throne for the day.

Enlist the help of sponsors. The tradition of enlisting sponsors is still in practice in some parts of Mexico. For instance, you can ask your godparents to sponsor an aspect such as your flowers, and your grandparents to sponsor your cake. However, if you do ask for help from sponsors, be mindful and don't go "overboard" with your requests.

The Quinceañera tradition symbolizes the evolution from childhood to womanhood. By taking an active role in planning and budgeting for your celebration, you'll be demonstrating your blossoming maturity and you'll gain the respect of your family and friends.

Location: My niece had her quince in the back yard of her grandparents' home. They rented a tent and decorated with twinkling white lights, tulle, fountains, a dance floor, and had rented chairs and tables. It was fabulous! It looked like a celebrity wedding. I'm going to see about doing that for my daughter's quince coming up in 2012.
