As I assist customers with their graduation announcement orders each spring, I can't help but to think back to when I graduated from high school. It was many years ago and I will not disclose the year of my graduation except to share a few highlights of that year with you.

Sony Corp. introduced its Walkman Cassette Player at a cost of $200, "What a Fool Believes" by the Doobie Brothers topped the charts as the single of the year, and "Kramer vs. Kramer" starring Dustin Hoffman was number one at the box office. See, I told you it was a long time ago!

My senior year started out by having my senior portraits taken. I was allowed two changes of clothing for the portraits and they were nothing like the portraits that are being taken now. Graduates celebrating this year will not only have multiple wardrobe changes, but different locations for the various shots. Today's photographs will often include props that portray the student's personality and achievements. Black and white and sepia-tone photographs are now supplied as a nice alternative to color.

I recall being very excited when my graduation announcement order arrived. Reality began to set in: I was finally going to graduate! With my announcements, I ordered name cards, photo and senior memory books, and a birthstone class ring in white gold. As seniors, members of our class would write notes in each other's memory books and we exchanged name cards. It was almost like a contest to see how many name cards one could collect…it now reminds me of how many friends one can acquire on Facebook!

Even though so many years have passed, I can still remember walking across the stage to accept my diploma like it was just yesterday. Graduation is truly a memorable moment to be treasured for a lifetime. Congratulations to the Class of 2011 as they prepare for a new chapter in their lives, whatever that may be!
